As card-carrying textile obsessives, we have been purchasing original gouache maquettes for both printed and woven fabrics for many years. Fan is inspired by one of our favourite examples – a 1920s maquette for a beautiful woven fabric. For many years we wanted to reinterpret this maquette as a wall covering, but the design suggested texture, so taking a small section of the original maquette we recreated it in needlepoint using three different stitches.
The resulting contrasts in texture conjure train carriage upholstery from the 1920s, while the chic colourways and quality of the materials – which include 100% British tapestry wool – bring a sense of extravagance to each handmade piece.
Maroon has oversized gold detailing rendered in rayon Surrey stitch which contrasts dramatically with a background made up of pale pink, dark pink and maroon wool.
