This panoramic design takes its cue from the age-old art of marquetry, where fragments of wood were patiently pieced together to create richly detailed botanical motifs and scenics. Historically, the beauty of these compositions lay not only in the finished image, but in the extraordinary patience and skill behind them.
For Bucolic Marquetry, we approached that tradition in a different medium. The design was first entirely hand-painted, building up a landscape of rolling hills and lush foliage with the sensitivity and irregularity of the artist’s brush. It was then meticulously rendered into print, retaining the nuance of the original painting and the spirit of something painstakingly assembled by hand.
