Fromental X Natalia Miyar | An Introduction

Envisioned by interior designer Natalia Miyar, and printed and hand-foiled by Fromental’s artists in the UK, the initial expression for the Ambia wallcovering collection was drawn from surrealism and cubism master Wifredo Lam’s strikingly coloured painting, La Jungla.

The best-known piece, by the most renowned Cuban painter, this work is widely revered as a critical painting in the history of Latin American art and twentieth-century modernism. For Ambia’s founding colorway, Vedado, Miyar sampled La Jungla’s deep and vibrant turquoise, blue, and green shades to embody the Caribbean palette of both Cuba and Miami, her hometown, creating a design that transforms the geometries found within the Lam painting.

Born as an art-inspired commission for the Masterpiece Art Fair in London, Miyar’s wallcovering collection, ‘Ambia’ for Fromental, celebrates the designer’s Cuban roots and resounding love for the energising spirit of Caribbean warmth and style.

Masterpiece is one of the world’s leading multidisciplinary art fairs, attracting established collectors and the culturally curious, offering the finest works of art, design, furniture and jewellery, from antiquity to the present day.

'I started by looking at Lam’s strikingly coloured painting, La Jungla. The summery turquoise, blue and green shades resonated with me as they embody the Caribbean palette of both Cuba and of Miami, my hometown. We created a design that looks to the forms and geometries of the Lam painting in a more abstract and organic way.' Natalia Miyar

Working closely with Fromental, Miyar played with a variety of techniques that include hand-painted marbling, paint speckles, and buckskin textures. These are interspersed with a specialist cracked eggshell inlay that creates the effect of colour-blocking from afar, with beautiful textural detailing up-close. The design is printed onto a waxed paper and hand-finished with metallic foil.

Building upon the original Vedado colourway, Natalia and Fromental worked to develop three additional variations, each recalling the grandeur of Old Havana. The line evolved with metallic flourishes and a variety of tones, spanning earthy reds, translucent whites, and pearlescent pinks, a palette reminiscent of semi-precious stones. The resulting family of four colorways (Vedado, Malecon, Miramar, and Playa), blend early 20th-century artistic vision with a delicate layering of contemporary sensibilities.
