Sculptural Wallcoverings: The Art of Dimension
There is a moment — familiar to anyone who has stood before a truly exceptional interior — when the eye refuses to move on. Not because a surface is loud or demanding, but because it is inexhaustibly rich. Because it repays looking and then looking again. This quality of sustained attention is an unwavering preoccupation at Fromental, and nowhere is it more fully realised than in our sculptural wallcoverings.
Fromental's sculptural wallcoverings are dimensional, hand-crafted wall surfaces that incorporate embroidery, crystal embellishment, and raised textile elements to create depth and light interaction beyond traditional flat wallpaper. Part of our broader portfolio of luxury wallcoverings and designer wallpaper, they represent the furthest expression of a practice that has always understood the wall as a site of artistic possibility.
To speak of sculptural wallcoverings is, in one sense, simply to speak of what we have always done. Dimension has been inherent to our practice from the beginning — most visibly through our embroidered wallcoverings, where silk threads build subtle relief across the surface, catching and releasing light as the day moves. What has evolved is our curiosity and ambition.
A Studio-Led Practice
Our approach to luxury wallcoverings has always been rooted in the studio rather than the trend cycle. Each collection begins with experimentation — through material, process and subject. Our embroidered wallcoverings established a vocabulary that our sculptural wallcoverings now extend: the same commitment to silk and natural materials, the same reverence for hand technique, the same conviction that a wall surface can and should function as a work of art.
This is bespoke interior design in its fullest sense. Every bespoke wallcovering we produce is made to order, which means every panel is considered in relation to the specific space it will inhabit, the light conditions it will encounter, the architecture it will engage with. Lead times of eight to fourteen weeks reflect our artists' dedication to their craft.
Craft at Its Most Considered
The defining characteristic of our sculptural wallcoverings is their denial of the purely decorative. While wallpaper traditionally operates on the picture plane — pattern, colour, print — our sculptural work performs in actual space. Crystals are laid, silk threads are built up, pom-poms are hand-stitched, one by one, onto silk or velvet grounds.
Consider Hirondelles, created in collaboration with legendary French crystal house Lalique to commemorate their 130th anniversary. Beginning with one of our classical chinoiseries, the design was reimagined to incorporate René Lalique's iconic swallow and dahlia crystals. The composition demanded dimension not merely as aesthetic decision but as necessity.
"The layering of texture and light, and the way form gains dimension, came together beautifully", says Tim Butcher, "— a convergence that felt entirely natural."
Goldoni takes an altogether different view of the world. On a sumptuous brushed-velvet ground, vertical architectural forms evoke the soaring geometries of the modern metropolis, while hand-stitched pom-poms in complementary tones scatter across the surface like city lights twinkling at twilight. It is technically meticulous, visually arresting, and possessed of that quality of inexhaustible interest we strive for in all our work.
Despite their profound differences, Hirondelles and Goldoni share a quality we prize above all others: they indulge the second glance as richly as the first. Under morning light, candlelight, from across the room and close enough to touch, they continue to reveal themselves — they delight.
Bespoke by Nature
All of our sculptural wallcoverings can be tailored to the specific requirements of a project, from custom colourways to adjusted scale and modifications to suit unusual architectural features. Our design studio works in close collaboration with architects, interior designers and private clients to arrive at solutions that suit all manner of requirements.
Projects that extend beyond our standard collections can be approached with complete creative freedom. Our studio will develop entirely new wallcoverings or reimagine existing designs, tailoring subject matter, material and method to the specific character of each space. From expansive multi-room schemes to statement installations, each commission is produced using materials that meet rigorous commercial standards, balancing artistic expression with technical excellence. For those coming to us for the first time, sample ordering is the natural starting point — a way to encounter the materiality of these designs in person before committing to a commission. For those ready to begin in earnest, our design team is available to discuss your project in full.
